    Screen caps

Two screen caps from 1 vs. 100 Live.

The mob screen is the first image, the One screen is the other. (Yeah, you probably could have figured that out yourself...)

    FarCry 2 has awesome fire?

Great interview with the developer "most responsible" for the behavior of fire in FarCry2. Great read.

    Hope

I was always envious of those folks who appeared to dare to have such staggering amounts of hope when Kennedy was elected. I NEVER thought there would be reason for that hope to appear again.

But, right now, having heard my new President speak to me, not down to me, not over me, not scaring me, not coercing me...I'm sitting here sobbing out years and years of hopelessness, pain and rage and I, too, am daring to feel hopeful. Sure, once those floodgates open, there's not much discrimination - hurt is hurt and like so many, I carry my share from a life of simply being human.

Hope, to me, has always been a sucker's bet. The fastest way to yet another crushing disappointment, yet another punch to the soul's throat, is to be stupid, naive and careless enough to presume that things might be okay. In lieu of shouldering that precarious burden, I swallowed hard and built a callous of cynicism. It's been better to abandon hope than risk making old wounds worse.

So, I'm deciding to take the risk of being hopeful. Even if it all goes sideways with the Obama administration, I have no sense of malice, impropriety, or a smirking front man for a select few, corpulent from a life of gorging on the flesh, blood and trust of the people. I think Obama is going to try to do good things. I need to see leadership choosing to do good things. I need my daughter to see it. I need her to feel the resonant proof of positive intent, on the global scale, even if the aspirations ultimately prove implausible in retrospect.

I need her to see her father have hope. I'm so grateful.

    I'm so hopeful.

The 7 Commandments All Video Games Should Obey | Cracked.com

I enjoyed this article. The author did a good job of expressing universal frustration in a humorous manner. Rather insightful comments about companies who seem to believe that having hyper-realistic graphics somewhat trumps a quality gaming / entertainment experience.

    Shareware album follow-up

Trent Reznor disclosed the numbers behind the distribution and sale of Saul William's album. A nice interview with Trent is available from cnet here.

    RTFM

I'm a believer in reading the manuals of the gear that I buy.

My HP MediaSmart server arrived today. I was reading the troubleshooting appendix of the manual and found an indication that, other than the author of the manual, I may be the only person to have read it. It certainly wasn't read by anyone between it being written and my reading it.

Scan below. The gold is in the second paragraph:

I can't help but think of the LOLCat trying to figure out how they ended up in the newspaper and fretting that they're not good with computers...

    Zune 2.0

I've been running the Zune 2.0 firmware on my 30GB Zune and I'm loving it, especially the wireless sync functionality. Wireless USB rocks. :)

I'm attempting to insert my Zune card below. Let's see if it works.

    Another "shareware" album release

Saul Williams has released a new album. Paying for it is optional. Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails worked with Saul on this release - his influence is clear and impressive - and the new album, "The Inevitable Rise and Fall of Niggy Tardust," is a free download, in 192kbps MP3, from www.saulwilliams.com.

If you opt to pay for it, it's only $5! That gives you access to either 320kbps MP3's or FLAC files.

I downloaded the freebie, listened, then went back and paid my $5 using PayPal. I pulled down the FLAC files and they're awesome.

    Perhaps the future is now?

    EveryGame strategy

A clever guy named Mark Schmidt wrote the following in a long discussion thread about what may have been World of Warcraft. I love it. To paraphrase someone else, it's a strategy for winning Gaming in general. Reposted with his permission.

I usually start with a backstab followed by flash powder. This gets them confused so I start whispering “Evil cometh” over and over to instill fear. I then perform a frontside 360 nollie kickflip and send my grapple hurling towards the nearest ledge. While hanging, I pull out my Battle Rifle and put a few shots in their head (making sure I have it loaded with poisoned lead to increase dot). I release the grapple, look for a Quad Damage, and roll myself into a ball and proceed to knock the mob over. While they’re on the ground, that gives me enough time to play a few licks of ThunderKiss ’65 at which point I then solve the riddle of the Sphinx by placing the umbrella in the music stand and making sure it faces the sun. By now, their damage is just about down so I pull my mask off revealing my skull and kind of stick out my tongue chanting “Get over here!” to bring them closer (sometimes I allow the large snake things on my back to help for balance). It’s then that I finish them off by eating a mushroom, pounding on them with a large hammer and right clicking on their head knowing full well that there’s probably a mine there. When they’re dead and gone, I celebrate by taking their picture for my album and grabbing their severed arm so I can use it on the next unsuspecting monster.

    Man I love this game.

    Phad Kee Mao FTW!

I love Phad Kee Mao. Especially from King & I in Bellevue, Washington.

I'm having it for lunch. One can forget that life is good. Phad Kee Mao can help one remember.

    Woot!

    End Fest 16

I'm at End Fest 16 with my daughter...and my wife, but she's hanging with a friend.

The Used is playing and pictured.

Saw Satellite Party and had no idea it was Perry Farrell's band. Lots of Jane's Addiction songs. Rocked.

Smashing Pumpkins plays in a few hours!

    UPDATE: 9/24/2007

Smashing Pumpkins played a peculiar set. It was far too short. Even my daughter was left saying, "How could they not play Zero or Cherub Rock?"

I was hoping for Ode to No One.

The jam songs approached Spinal Tap levels of guitar wankery.

Jimmy C. continues to be a percussion god.

Strange that Billy didn't introduce the rest of the band. Or maybe not, as it's Billy. :)

    I love my Sumo chair

After sitting for hours in them at Penny Arcade Expo 2007, I ordered myself an Omni from Sumo.

It's huge. It's easily reshapeable, yet holds its form nicely. Nicely constructed, too. It will likely last for years.

I usually sit in a nice recliner while doing leisurely stuff at home. Sometimes, though, my back gets unhappy and it's tough to stay comfortable.

Not so with the Sumo. It gives great support and I can stay comfortable for hours.

I've had the Fiery Red one at home for about a week. I just ordered a Tangerine one for my office.

    Tangerine Omni

USD$129, free shipping from Canada. Pricey, but well worth it. Mine will arrive without the pictured slackette.

How long to sing this song?

    I turned 40 last week.

Strange to consider, since I often seem to be 17.

Some old friends sent thoughtful greetings, my family and I had a lovely dinner at a Japanese restaurant. Thoughtful gifts were received and appreciated. Smile

In related news, a few weeks ago, I treated myself to a remarkable birthday gift. One of my favorite musicians, Brian Vander Ark, of The Verve Pipe & several solo albums, is doing a summer tour, raising money to produce his next album. He put the call out to his fans, I booked a private performance. As of last week, he'd booked 72 shows over the summer and still has some dates open. Check out his site for more details on the "Lawn Chairs & Living Rooms 2007" tour.

Brian drove to the house straight from the airport, played a ridiculous number of songs at my request and delighted his audience.

I even had the opportunity to play along with one of his songs and then did my best to play lead (on an acoustic, ouch) on a bluesy cover song.

Playing music with someone is one of my favorite things to do. Having the chance to play a great song with the person who wrote and recorded it is a rare joy.

I was simply delighted and gushing.
